Origin and history
The Saint-Sauveur church of Auray, also known as the Saint-Goustan church, is located in the eponymous district of the city of Auray, in the Morbihan department. Built in the 15th and 16th centuries, it embodies the Breton religious architecture of this period, marked by Gothic and Renaissance influences. The gate, the only vestige of the original building after the fire of 1886, is a remarkable example of wood sculpture, with vantals adorned with rinceaux and shield panels.
A fire ravaged the church in 1886, destroying the choir. The reconstruction, carried out at the end of the 19th century, nevertheless preserves the original gate, inscribed with historical monuments by order of 12 May 1925. This portal, partly dated by an inscription of 1400 on a pillar, presents stylistic elements of the reigns of Henry II and Louis XIII, such as the lower gate. An outer cross bears the date of 1668, recalling other historical interventions.
The church, owned by the commune of Auray, is part of the urban landscape of the Saint-Goustan district, known for its maritime and religious heritage. Its history reflects the hazards of Breton monuments, between destruction, reconstruction and preservation of emblematic elements. Today, it remains a place of worship and a testimony of local sacred art, accessible to the public.
