Origin and history

The Saint-Surien church of Châteauneuf-sur-Charente is a typical example of the primitive novel, having inspired other churches in the department. Its nave, composed of two spans, lost its double arch pillars and its original vault, replaced by a floor. The choir, surmounted by a stone dome, and the cul-de-four vaulted apse bear witness to its medieval architecture. The walls were raised at the end of the 11th century, while the campanile dates from the 16th century.

Given to Saint-Florent Abbey of Saumur in 1114 by Bishop Girard II, this church illustrates the links between episcopal power and monastic institutions in the Middle Ages. Today, as an annex to Châteauneuf, it retains traces of its medieval past despite subsequent transformations, such as the partial disappearance of its Romanesque structures.

Classified as a Historical Monument in 1925, the church of Saint-Surin embodies a modest and emblematic religious heritage. Its inscription protects its oldest elements, including the dome and the abside, while stressing its historical role in the region. The location, although documented, remains approximate according to available sources (precision: 7/10).
