Church (Box B 204): Registration by decree of 7 April 1994

Origin and history

The church of Saint-Sylvain de Queille, located in Saint-Quentin-la-Tour (Occitanie), is a historical monument whose first records date back to the 10th century. The present building, built in the 13th century, has a single nave covered with a frame and a pentagonal apse with cut-pans. Its arch bell tower, with two openings, and its vaulted cul-de-four choir illustrate an architectural transition between Romanesque and Gothic styles, visible especially in carved capitals.

Traces of painted decoration remain inside, and three layers are observable near the columns. Graffiti, some dated 1591, testify to its use over the centuries. At the beginning of the 19th century, an annex building for residential use was added, today in ruins. The church, protected by a decree of inscription in 1994, belongs to the commune and retains elements such as a cul-de-four vault and carved ornaments.

The monument reflects the evolution of local religious and architectural practices, from its medieval mention to its modern modifications. Its present state, marked by varied historical traces, makes it a witness to the community and artistic life of the region over centuries.
