Origin and history
The Saint-Symphorian church of Touches is a religious building located in Mercurey, in the department of Saône-et-Loire (region Burgundy-Franche-Comté). Its construction begins in the 4th quarter of the 12th century, but the works extend mainly to the 13th century and end in the 16th century. Late additions include the enlargement of the nave, arched at a dogive cross, and the resumption of the bell tower, characterized by four gables pierced with gimmicked bays on two floors. These elements illustrate the evolution of architectural styles between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
Classified as a historical monument by decree of September 10, 1913, the church falls under the Diocese of Autun and today depends on the parish of Saint-Symphorien-en-Côte-Chalonnaise (seat in Givry). It remains an active Catholic place of worship, centuries after its foundation, in accordance with the 1905 Law on the Separation of Churches and the State. Its property belongs to the municipality of Mercurey, and its conservation status is considered satisfactory (note 7/10 for location accuracy).
Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Mérimée base) highlight its heritage and religious role in the wine region of the Chalonnaise Coast. The exact address, 31 Rue de la Cure, and its Insee code (71294) confirm its territorial anchor. No information is available on any historical characters related to its construction or past use.
