Origin and history

The parish church of St. Thomas of St. Thomas came into being in the sixth century, when it was originally founded. This first building, whose precise traces remain rare, marks the early anchoring of Christianity in this area of the present Ardèche. The original structure, probably modest, reflected the religious and community practices of the first Christian communities settled in the ardèche countryside after the fall of the Roman Empire.

A major reconstruction took place in the 12th century, when the church most probably adopted a Romanesque style, characteristic of the religious buildings of this period in the Rhône-Alpes. This project in the Middle Ages coincides with a phase of development of rural parishes and consolidation of local ecclesiastical power. Subsequent changes, such as those of the 18th century (addition of a porch and a funeral liter now gone), illustrate the evolution of liturgical needs and artistic tastes under the Old Regime.

In the 19th century, the church underwent two notable changes: the elevation of the bell tower in the first half of the century, and the construction of a new main façade between 1868 and 1870. This work, often linked to restoration or beautification campaigns, is part of a national context of rediscovering medieval heritage. Two elements in re-use — a Latin inscription and a head of Christ — integrated into the facade, also testify to the reuse of ancient materials, a practice common in buildings with historical stratifications.

The church is listed in the inventory of historical monuments by order of 12 April 1927, official recognition of its heritage value. This protection comes within a strengthened legal framework after the First World War, when the preservation of rural religious buildings becomes a priority in the face of their progressive degradation. Today, the building remains owned by the municipality of Saint-Thomé and retains architectural traces of its multiple construction phases.
