Origin and history
The Saint-Thurien Church of Plogonnec, listed as a Historic Monument, is an emblematic building of the 15th and 16th centuries. It is characterized by its bell tower dated 1638, decorated with domes and lanterns, as well as by a complex cover where each span is marked by a distinct gable. The church preserved a large part of its original stained glass windows, especially in the north side and at the ends of the lower side, as well as in the central window of the choir. Its parish enclosure, surrounded by a cemetery, includes fence walls, doors and a triumphal arch, reflecting the religious architecture of Brittany of the time.
The building of the church spanned several periods: the western part of the nave dates back to the 15th century, while the entire vessel was erected in the 16th century. The porch, dated 1581, and the tower, built between 1656 and 1661, bear historical inscriptions. In 1721, the four main pillars of the choir were transformed, and the sacristy was added in 1864. The enclosure also houses remarkable elements such as a 19th century cross, a high Middle Ages cross, a Christianized stele and an early 18th century portal.
The church, with its cemetery and triumphal arch, was ordered on 28 October 1922. It belongs to the municipality of Plogonnec, located in Finistère, and bears witness to the architectural and religious evolution of Brittany throughout the centuries. The inscriptions on the tower and the elements of the enclosure offer tangible traces of its rich and varied history.
