Origin and history

The Church of St.Trophyma of Bormes-les-Mimosas is a Catholic religious building located in the department of Var, Bormes-les-Mimosas. Built at the end of the 18th century, it is inspired by the Romanesque style and replaces an ancient medieval church dedicated to the same saint, mentioned as early as 517 near the feudal castle. Inside, we discover a tin altar designed by architect Kappelin, wooden reliquary busts, retables and an ancient cross path. In 1999, restoration works revealed frescoes dating from its construction.

The church has been protected as historical monuments since November 21, 1973. Its facade features a sundial engraved with the Latin motto "Ab hora diei ad horam Dei" ("From the hour of the day to the hour of God"). In 2023, she hosted the wedding of Princess Alexandra of Luxembourg with Nicolas Bagory, highlighting her role in contemporary events.

Saint Trophime, to whom the church is dedicated, is associated with the evangelization of Provence in the first century according to Gregory of Tours. Historically, he was the first bishop of Arles around 250. His liturgical feast is celebrated on December 29. This link with the Christian origins of the region reinforces the heritage dimension of the building.

The parish of Bormes, attested as early as 517, illustrates the seniority of the Christian presence in this area of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The present church, although recent compared to this millennium history, perpetuates this heritage through its architecture and classified furniture elements.
