Origin and history

The Saint-Vital-et-Saint-Agricol church, located in Bulhon in Puy-de-Dôme, is an auvergnat-style Romanesque building built in the 12th century. Originally a castral chapel, it was given to the monks of the Chaise-Dieu in 1050, long before its Romanesque reconstruction. Its architecture, typical of the region, includes a four-span nave, collaterals, a non-extinguishing transept and a hemicycle choir. The cupola on trunks of the square of the transept and the apsidioles in cul-de-four illustrate the technical mastery of the novel builders.

The sculpture of capitals, exceptionally well preserved, is a major artistic testimony. Each basket, topped by a molded tailloir and an oric astragal, has a variety of motifs: foliage, interlaces, animals and stylized characters. These decorative elements, combined with the intact structure of the building, highlight the historic and heritage significance of the church, which was classified as a Historic Monument in 1960.

The bell tower, added later, contrasts with the Romanesque authenticity of the rest of the building. The cul-de-four vault of the apse, decorated with five arches in the middle of the hanger, and the lateral apsidioles reinforce architectural harmony. A communal property, the church embodies both Bulhon's religious and seigneurial past, while remaining a place of worship and heritage accessible to the public.
