Origin and history

The Saint-Vivian de Bords Church, located in the Charente-Maritime department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is an emblematic example of Saintonge's Romanesque style. Built in the 12th century, it underwent major transformations in the 15th century, especially after the destruction of the Hundred Years' War. Its original plan, probably damaged by a fire, was modified to incorporate two lateral chapels forming transept, while the original Romanesque bell tower was preserved without being completed.

The architecture of the building combines primitive Romanesque elements, such as the bedside, the right span planned for the bell tower and part of the nave, with Gothic additions such as the current bell tower and a northern chapel. The Romanesque portal, adorned with three tufts supported by smooth capital columns, bears witness to a high quality stone masonry. Inside, the modillons, capitals and carved decorations of the bedside are inspired directly by those of the church Saint-Pierre d'Aulnay, another major Saintongeian monument.

Classified as a historical monument since December 5, 1984, the church of Saint-Vivian illustrates the architectural evolution and adaptations suffered by the religious buildings of Saintonge over the centuries. Its history reflects regional upheavals, including the medieval conflicts that marked its development. Today, it remains a protected communal heritage, open to visit and anchored in the religious landscape of Bords.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its importance in local heritage. The precise coordinates (1 Place Saint-Vivien, 17430 Bords) and its Insee code (17053) confirm its territorial anchoring in the former Poitou-Charentes region, now integrated into New Aquitaine. The protected elements include the entire parish church, as defined in the classification order.
