Origin and history

Sainte-Anne Church is an emblematic Catholic church on Réunion Island, a French overseas department located in the Indian Ocean. Built between 1857 and 1862 under the direction of Abbé Carnet, it is located in the territory of the commune of Saint-Benoît, specifically in the village of Sainte-Anne. His architecture and history earned him a classification as Historic Monuments on October 11, 1982, making him one of the most remarkable buildings in the region.

The bell tower and the chapel of Sainte-Thérèse were later added, beginning in 1922, under the impulse of Father Dodemberger. The church also served as the setting for François Truffaut's film La Sirène du Mississippi, adding a cultural dimension to its heritage importance. The protected elements include the facade with its bell tower as well as the chapel Sainte-Thérèse, including its painted interior decor. The sculptor Daubenberger Peri contributed to his creation.

The Sainte-Anne Church is owned by the municipality of Saint-Benoît and is an active place of worship and a symbol of the religious and architectural heritage of Réunion. Its location on the Church Square in the village of Sainte-Anne makes it a central point of local life. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair, with an official address recorded in the Merimée database.
