Origin and history

The church Sainte-Benoîte de Lerzy, located in the Aisne department in the Hauts-de-France region, is a fortified church built in the sixteenth century. It is characterized by a pseudo-basilical nave with three vessels, a bell tower dating from the late twelfth century, and an imposing square tower flanked by two circular turrets. This monument, typical of the fortified churches of Thiérache, was partially classified as historical monuments in 1928 for its medieval bell tower.

On the night of March 11-12, 2014, a fire caused by a badly extinguished torch during work on the structure ravaged the building, saving only the bell tower. Investigations confirmed the accidental origin of the accident, linked to maintenance work. Furniture and works of art, including statues and stained glass, were saved in extremis, while the structure threatened to collapse, requiring urgent consolidation with scaffolding and trestle.

The reconstruction, which began in June 2016 after a fund raising of 3 million euros (financed by the State, the municipality, donations and insurances), allowed to discover medieval frescoes dating from the 13th century. The wooden frame and slate cover were restored between 2016 and 2017. Initially scheduled for 2018, the reopening to the public marked the revival of this emblematic heritage, combining defensive architecture and religious heritage.

The bell tower, the only element spared by the 2014 fire, remains the oldest witness of the building with its origins dating back to the late twelfth century. Its inscription in historic monuments in 1928 underscores its heritage importance. The frescoes revealed during the work attest to an occupation and religious decoration well before the current construction, revealing unsuspecting historical strata.

The church of Sainte-Benoîte illustrates the fortified ecclesiastical architecture of Thiérache, a border region marked by historical conflicts. These churches, designed to house people in sieges, combine religious and military functions. Their preservation, as in Lerzy, bears witness to the continuous efforts to safeguard this unique heritage, mixing medieval history and contemporary resilience.
