Origin and history

The Sainte-Catherine church of Bonneville, in Haute-Savoie, has its origins between 1262 and 1283 with the construction of a first building. This medieval church, a unique nave surrounded by chapels, even hosts a Synod of the Bishopric of Geneva in the 14th century. Its architectural simplicity is attested by sources such as the visit of the prior of Contamine in 1592. The building, rebuilt in the 17th century to adopt a cross shape, becomes obsolete over time.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the decision was taken to rebuild the church. The works, begun in 1838, were completed in 1842, and the new church was consecrated in 1845. Without funding, the original bell tower was reused before being destroyed in 1862. A temporary bell tower, erected in 1932, still remains today. The present neo-classical church is distinguished by its three naves and doric capitals.

The interior houses a marble altar, the work of the Gualino brothers, as well as three protected statues. The monument thus illustrates the architectural and religious evolution of Bonneville, between medieval heritage and modern transformations. Its history also reflects the financial and technical challenges associated with its preservation throughout the centuries.
