Origin and history
The church Sainte-Croix de Veauce, located in the Allier department in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, is an emblematic Romanesque building founded in the 11th century. It was offered in 1080 by Aimon de Veauce, local lord, to the monks of the abbey Saint-Léger d'Ébreuil, marking his spiritual and seigneurial anchor. A chapter settled there in the 14th century, lasting until 1766, testifying to its continuing religious role throughout the centuries.
Ranked a historic monument in 1862, the church illustrates auvergnat Romanesque art by its atypical walk-through, devoid of radiant chapels, a characteristic shared with Notre-Dame de Saint-Saturnin. The nave, initially longer, was truncated in 1779 with the suppression of two spans, while the bell tower was enhanced in 1882 thanks to the patronage of Baron Charles Eugène De Cadier de Veauce, who offered three bells on this occasion.
The major transformations of the 18th and 19th centuries, such as the modification of the nave and the elevation of the bell tower, reflect the adaptations of the building to the liturgical and aesthetic needs of each era. Its early classification underscores its exceptional heritage value, linked to its architecture and its seigneurial and monastic history.
