Origin and history
The church Sainte-Eulalie de Champniers, located in the Charente department, is a religious building dating back to the twelfth century. Built on the foundations of an older church, it features a unique nave, a transept and an apse in the hemicycle. Its Romanesque architecture, marked by cradle vaults and a dome at the level of the octagonal bell tower, bears witness to its historical importance in the region.
Over the centuries, the church has undergone several changes, notably in the 14th and 15th centuries, with the addition of a chapel to the north and lateral passages linking the nave to the transept, a rare device in the Charente. The major restorations of the 19th century profoundly transformed its facade, rebuilt in a Romanesque style faithful to the original, while adding two spans to the west of the nave. This work, carried out until 1863, preserved its character while adapting to the needs of the time.
Classified as a historic monument in 1913, the church of Sainte-Eulalie illustrates the architectural and religious evolution of the region. Its arched apsidioles in cul-de-four, transept and octagonal bell tower make it a remarkable example of the Romanesque and Gothic heritage of New Aquitaine. The property of the municipality remains a place of worship and a testimony of local history, accessible to the public.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its heritage importance. Its exact address, 88 Place de l'Église in Champniers, and its Insee code (16078) confirm its anchoring in the Charente territory, in the heart of New Aquitaine. Protected elements, such as the nave, transept and the abside, are now preserved for future generations.
