The whole church, including murals (cf. G 11): inscription by decree of 10 September 2001

Origin and history

The church Sainte-Geneviève de Lindry is a religious building located in the department of Yonne, in the commune of Lindry, in the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Built in the 16th century, it features a barlong plan complemented by a sacristy. Its choir, with a flat bedside, is decorated with a altarpiece dating back to the early 18th century, and its walls house murals, some of which are still hidden under a padigeon. Among these works are a Dit of the three dead and the three alive visible on the north wall, a medieval theme illustrating a reflection on the mortality and vanity of earthly honours.

The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 10 September 2001, thus protecting the entire church, including its murals. The property belongs to the town of Lindry. The church is located Place de la Liberté, although approximate GPS coordinates are also located at 28 Rue du 14 juillet. Its architecture and interior decorative elements, such as the altarpiece and frescoes, testify to its heritage and cultural importance in the region.

Burgundy-Franche-Comté, in the modern era, was a region marked by an intense rural and religious life. Parish churches, like Lindry's, played a central role in community life, serving as places of worship, assembly and preservation of sacred art. These buildings often reflected the artistic and architectural influences of their time, while integrating local elements, such as murals of a moral or didactic nature.
