Vincent Lauret - Provost of the Metropolitan Saint-Étienne Church commander in 1329.

Origin and history

The Sainte-Madeleine church of Mourvilles-Hautes was built in 1329 on the initiative of Vincent Lauret, provost of the Metropolitan Saint-Étienne of Toulouse. The building is distinguished by a four-span nave, separated by committed half-columns decorated with carved capitals. The original height of the nave was reduced in 1771 by the addition of brick vaults, while the choir, five-paned, lost its original vault (frozen at the beginning of the 20th century), replaced by a panel.

Three chapels open to the north and two to the south, reflecting architecture adapted to the liturgical needs of the time. The bell tower-wall, probably erected in the 19th century, completes the whole. The church, classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 12 March 1970, illustrates the architectural evolutions between the Middle Ages and the modern era, while preserving characteristic Gothic elements.

The location of the building in Mourvilles-Hautes (Haute-Garonne), in the former Midi-Pyrénées region (now Occitanie), makes it a witness to rural religious heritage. Its state of conservation, considered a priori satisfactory (note 6/10), and its communal property underline its anchor in local life. Structural changes (bells, lambris) reveal successive adaptations to technical constraints and cultural uses.
