Origin and history
Église Sainte-Madeleine de Touvre is a 12th-century fortified church in the Charente department, in the commune of Touvre. It occupies a rocky spur where once a castle was located, dominant to the south the sources of the Touvre. This strategic positioning suggests a defensive and symbolic role in the local medieval landscape.
The building presents in its nave four capitals of the twelfth century, inscribed in historical monuments since 1938. These elements, as well as the portal (registered in 1949), testify to its architectural importance. In 2018, a global inscription replaced partial protections, now covering the entire church. The western part dates from the middle of the 12th century, while the choir was completed at the end of the same century.
The church underwent several restorations: after damage in 1631, then in 1755, and finally in 1845, where brick vaults were added. The current tower, overflowing, replaces an old bell tower located on the false square. These modifications reflect the successive adaptations of the building to liturgical and structural needs throughout the centuries.
Owned by the commune of Touvre, the church is today a testimony of Romanesque architecture in New Aquitaine. Its inscription in historical monuments underscores its heritage value, both for its carved elements and for its history linked to the medieval urbanization of the region.
The location of the church, near the sources of the Touvre, reinforces its anchor in the natural and historical landscape. These sources, among the most important in France, probably played a role in choosing its location, combining water resources and defensive position.
The successive protections (1938, 1949, 2018) illustrate a gradual recognition of its heritage value. The capitals, the gate and the entire building are now preserved, offering an overview of art and medieval history in Charente.
