Origin and history

The Church of Sainte-Marie de Montalba-d'Amélie is a Catholic religious building located in the village of Montalba-d'Amélie, in the commune of Amélie-les-Bains-Palalda, in the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales. Built in the seventeenth century, it succeeds an older Romanesque church, whose existence bears witness to a continuing religious occupation of the site since the Middle Ages. This place of worship is part of the Christian architectural landscape of the region, marked by Catalan and Occitan influences.

The monument houses remarkable liturgical furniture, including a altarpiece dedicated to the Virgin, classified with French movable heritage (reference PM66000013). This altarpiece, representing scenes of Marian life such as the Nativity of the Virgin or the Assumption, illustrates the importance of Marian worship in this border area between France and Catalonia. Regional studies, such as those carried out in the Corpus des Vierges à l'Enfant (XII-15th century), highlight the richness of the local religious heritage, although few specific details specific to Sainte-Marie de Montalba are available from the sources consulted.

The church is part of a territory marked by a complex history, between Catalan influence (as evidenced by its mention in Catalunya Romanica) and French administrative affiliation. Its architecture and furniture reflect this cultural duality, typical of the Pyrénées-Orientales. The associated bibliographic references, including works on Catalan Romanesque art or baroque retables, suggest a monument at the crossroads of several artistic and spiritual traditions.
