Origin and history
The Sainte-Marie church of Saint-Pastous is a listed historical monument, combining 12th century Romanesque architecture and 18th century additions. This small building is characterized by a semicircular apse arched in cul-de-four, preceded by a cradle span. On the outside, the cornice of the abside rests on carved modillons (representing birds or human figures), while on the inside, a cornice separates the walls from the vault throughout the length of the building. The remains of murals, visible under a window at the base of the bell tower, evoke female figures, rare testimonies of medieval decoration.
The bell tower-wall, built in the 18th century, incorporates a staircase and two bays in the middle of the hangar, marking a stylistic evolution compared to the original Romanesque structure. It is narrower than the nave and creates a drop from outside, typical of some rural churches in the region. The building, owned by the commune, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 30 July 1986. Its state of conservation and location (65400 Saint-Pastous, Hautes-Pyrénées) make it a representative example of the Occitan religious heritage, mixing Romanesque simplicity and subsequent adaptations.
The sculpted models of the abside, although partially eroded, offer an overview of medieval decorative motifs, while the fragmentary murals suggest a rich iconography today disappeared. The location of the church, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), allows a visit within the framework of the local heritage. Its opening to the public or its possible tourist vocations (rent, guest rooms) are however not specified in the available sources.
