Origin and history

The Sainte-Marie church of Sainte-Marie-aux-English, located in Calvados on the territory of the associated commune of Sainte-Marie-aux-English (Mézidon Vallée d'Auge), is a religious building built between the 12th and 13th centuries. The nave, dated by dendrochronology around 1145, precedes the choir (circa 1220), while the current bell tower, added between 1411 and 1455, replaces a structure originally absent. This chapel, which became parish church in the 17th to 18th centuries, was originally built as a burial place for the family of Sainte-Marie, whose gisters still adorn the choir.

The chapel is a rare example of preserved Norman Romanesque architecture, with a three-span nave and a vaulted choir. His wall paintings, mostly from the 13th century, form an exceptional ensemble in Normandy: the choir presents a Marian cycle, while the nave illustrates religious and historical scenes (murder of Thomas Becket, crusades, feast of Herod). Two Gothic windows have replaced original Romanesque bays, but the overall structure remains faithful to its 12th century design.

The history of the building is marked by periods of oblivion and safeguard. Disacralized in 1836 after the parishioners' request to join other churches, it escaped destruction thanks to the intervention of the local chestnutman Monsieur de La Porte. Enlisted for the Historic Monuments in 1850 and then unregistered, it was definitively protected on November 19, 1910. After major restorations (clocher in 2018, decors since 2023), it remains closed to the public during the works.

Historical sources are missing precisely to date the initial construction, but architectural and dendrochronological studies confirm its medieval origin. The chapel also preserves traces of its successive patrons, such as the tombstone of Caesar Auguste de Mathan (Lord in the seventeenth century) and his wife Madeleine de Drosay, "lady" of Sainte-Marie-aux-English. These elements underline its role both religious, seigneurial and memorial throughout the centuries.
