Origin and history
The Church of St. Mary of Sartene was built following the collapse of the old church in 1765. Work began in 1766 and continued throughout the 19th century, marking a long period of reconstruction. The bell tower, the construction of which began in 1768, is distinguished by its three blind levels and its three levels pierced with bays, surmounted by a dome bell. The sober gable façade is pierced by a two-vantal door and two half-circle windows.
The nave, separated from the choir by a polychrome marble balustrade, is covered with a vault. This monument, inscribed in the Historical Monuments since 1985, reflects Corsican religious architecture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Its location in the heart of Sartène, Place de la Libération, makes it a central element of local heritage.
Owned by the municipality, the Sainte-Marie church illustrates the evolution of construction techniques and artistic styles in Corsica during this period. Its bell tower, particularly remarkable, and its sober facade make it a typical example of the parish churches of the time. The materials used, such as polychrome marble, bear witness to a concern for beautification and durability.
The listing of Historic Monuments in 1985 helped preserve this heritage, while stressing its historical and architectural importance. Today, the church remains an active place of worship and a symbol of the cultural identity of Sardinia and Corsica.
