Église Sainte-Marie (cad. A 217): Order of 6 October 1976

Origin and history

The Church of Sainte-Marie de Valle-d'Orezza is a Catholic religious building located in the municipality of the same name, in Upper Corsica. Built in the 18th century, it consists of a central nave flanked by side chapels with cut strips, and a bell tower aligned with the main façade. The latter is surmounted by a triangular pediment, while the interior features a rich Baroque decoration, including torso columns, garlands, volutes and winged angels. The vaulted ceiling of the choir is decorated with paintings, adding to the artistic value of the building.

The chapel of Sainte-Marie des Neiges, mentioned on the Plan Terrier of 1776, could date from the seventeenth or eighteenth century, although its exact relationship with the present church is not explicitly specified. The building was classified as historic monuments by order of 6 October 1976, thereby recognizing its heritage importance. The property belongs to the municipality of Valle-d'Orezza, and its architecture reflects the stylistic influences of the Baroque period in Corsica.

The church illustrates the central role of religious buildings in Corsican community life in the 18th century. At that time, churches served not only as places of worship, but also as social and cultural centres, where gatherings, celebrations and collective decisions took place. Their sumptuous decoration, such as that observed at Sainte-Marie, often reflected the local prosperity or devotion of the faithful, while integrating artistic elements specific to the region, such as torso columns or baroque motifs adapted to the island context.
