Origin and history

The church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine du Bellay-en-Vexin, located in Val-d'Oise in Île-de-France, is a religious building built mainly between the 12th and 16th centuries. Its architecture reflects a superimposition of styles, with a nave-grange of Romanesque origin, a bell tower base with Romanesque and Gothic capitals, and a Renaissance choir. The building, classified as a historic monument in 1965, preserves remarkable elements such as historic capitals and a 17th century baroque altarpiece.

The foundation of the parish probably dates back to 1160, although the first architectural traces date from the late 11th or early 12th century. The church, originally linked to the abbey of Saint-Martin de Pontoise, underwent several major transformations: the construction of a southern Gothic cruise radiating at the end of the 13th century, the addition of a flamboyant Gothic chapel to the north in the 16th century, and the reconstruction of the choir in a Renaissance style. These successive changes preserved the original cruciform plan while enriching the building with various stylistic details.

The bell tower, characteristic of the churches of Vexin, probably dates from the early 14th century, although some sources evoke 1376. Its belfry floor, adorned with geminied bays and monstrous head sculptures, bears witness to a marked Gothic influence. Inside, the base of the bell tower houses Romanesque and Gothic capitals, some of which are historical, such as a man strangled with a bird. These elements, combined with 13th century vaults and arches in the middle of the hangar, illustrate the historical complexity of the monument.

The nave, of Romanesque origin, has been enhanced and redesigned several times, including with the addition of Gothic windows and foothills. The gates, one of which is blocked, reflect stylistic influences ranging from the 13th to the 16th century. The church's furniture includes classified works such as a 15th century Pietà and a 17th century baroque altarpiece, as well as a 1535 bronze bell, the only vestige of that time.

The church, now affiliated with the parish of Magny-en-Vexin, is a major architectural testimony of the French Vexin. Although religious celebrations are rare, it remains a place of active heritage, preserved and open to visitors. Its immediate environment, including the former farm of the Hôtel-Dieu classified since 1913, reinforces its historical and landscape interest.
