Origin and history

The Sainte-Martine church of Pont-du-Château, located in the Puy-de-Dôme department, is one of the few churches dedicated to Saint Martine, a Roman virgin and martyr of the third century. Built on a hilltop, it served as a fortress before the Carolingian era and was dedicated to boatmen of the suburb of the marinaters. Its architecture combines Romanesque and Gothic elements in Volvic stone, reflecting its two major construction periods: the 12th and 13th centuries.

Ranked a historic monument in 1911, the church underwent notable changes, such as the partial destruction of its historic capitals in 1830, which the pastor of the time considered "too lenient". In 1994, its medieval polychromies — dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries — were reproduced, while a witness of the original Romanesque decoration remains in the north nave. The choir, decorated in the 19th century, was restored and preserved, illustrating the stylistic superpositions of the building.

In 2022, the priory of Sainte-Martine was included in the list of sites of the European Federation of Clunisian Sites, stressing its heritage importance. The following year, a reading plaque was unveiled, marking its anchor in European cultural and religious networks. The building, owned by the commune, remains a local symbol combining maritime, military and religious history.

Historical sources also mention in-depth studies, such as those by Geneviève Barrière or Georges Bontemps, published by the Association des amis du vieux Pont-du-Château. This work documents its unique architecture, including a six-spaned vaulted nave based on carved head capitals, as well as radiant chapels and a circular apse. The modern bell tower replaces an initial project involving two towers surrounding the gallery.
