Origin and history

The Sainte-Rictrude church of Marchiennes, located in the Nord department (Hautes-de-France), replaces a 14th or 15th century medieval building, deemed too small for the population and damaged after the lightning of 1742. Its reconstruction was decided in 1779, entrusted to the Lille architect Jacques-François-Joseph Lesaffre. The work began in 1786, but stopped abruptly in 1790 when the tower collapsed on the nave, leaving the parish without a place of worship for 35 years.

The reconstruction resumed in 1808 under the direction of architect Benjamin Dewarlez-Lepers, with a brick and limestone facade designed by Lesaffre, inspired by Italian palladianism. The church was completed in 1815, marked by neoclassical sobriety: large volumes, rare circular apse, and lateral lighting without original stained glass. The furniture, designed by Dewarlez, includes stalls still visible today.

In the 19th century, the interior was enriched: in 1864 Charles Maillard added a plaster decoration to the vaults and bays, contrasting with the initial austerity. In 1903, the republican motto "Freedom, Equality, Fraternity" was engraved on the pediment, reflecting tensions between Church and State. The bell tower, restored in 1902 and 2001, suffered a partial collapse during storm Eleanor in 2018.

Ranked a Historical Monument in 1992, the church illustrates the architectural and social evolution of Marchiennes, from its medieval foundation near a Benedictine abbey to its present role as a communal heritage. Local materials (stones, bricks, limestone from Hordain) and stylistic influences (neoclassicism, palladianism) underline its regional anchor.
