Origin and history
The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Beauquesne, located in the Somme department, was originally built in the 13th century. At the end of the 19th century, the medieval building was demolished to give way to a new church, with the exception of the original bell tower, which was preserved. The latter, made of white stone, has been protected as historical monuments since 4 March 1926.
The present church, built at the beginning of the twentieth century, adopts a neo-Roman style with brick and stone walls, decorated with a two-coloured checker decoration. Inside, it houses an 18th century confessional, inscribed as a historical monument in 1986, as well as a mosaic entitled The Angels of Sacrifice and Victory, made by Gustave Riquet.
The bell tower, the only vestige of the 13th century, is distinguished by its four-storey tower surmounted by an arrowed roof. The current building, without transept, follows a traditional basilical plan with low sides. These architectural features reflect both the medieval heritage and stylistic influences of the early twentieth century.
