Origin and history

The church Saint-Sulpice de Voisines, located in the Yonne department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a religious building built at the end of the 12th century and at the beginning of the 13th century. It replaced an old Romanesque church and depended on Saint-Jean de Sens Abbey. This monument, of fortified style, is distinguished by its ogival vaults and triple nave, characteristic of the medieval architecture of the region.

The church houses a classified 16th century eagle-lutrin, as well as two 1569 bells, also protected. Its square and imposing bell tower dominates the village, located on the upper part of Voisines. The building was listed as a historic monument in 1926, recognizing its heritage and architectural value.

The construction of this church is part of a historical context marked by the influence of regional abbeys, such as Sens, which played a central role in religious and social organization. The fortified churches, such as that of Voisines, also reflect the protection needs of local communities during the Middle Ages, a period marked by conflict and instability.

The church furniture, including the eagle-lutrin and bells, bears witness to the importance of liturgical objects in the religious practice of the time. These elements, classified as historical monuments, illustrate the craftsmanship and artistic richness of the 16th and 17th centuries.

The inscription of the church in 1926 underscores its historical and architectural interest, while ensuring its preservation for future generations. Today, this monument remains a symbol of the local heritage and a testimony of the religious history of Burgundy-Franche-Comté.

The location of the church, on a high point of Neighbours, could indicate a desire for visibility and protection, typical of medieval buildings. This strategic positioning also strengthens its central role in the community and spiritual life of the village over the centuries.
