Origin and history

The former Mirangeron de Nevers high school, built between the 18th century and the first quarter of the 19th century, is an emblematic building located on Mirangeron Street and Rue des Francs-Bourgeois. It includes in its architectural ensemble the former Hotel Marion de Givry, bearing witness to a preserved historical and urban heritage. The site suffered major damage during the Second World War, being bombed and ventilated, making it unusable for several decades. Its reconstruction and renovation, carried out between 1985 and 1987 under the mandate of Pierre Bérégovoy, then Mayor of Nevers, gave it a new mixed vocation: housing (private and social), a kindergarten, and a residence for the elderly.

The facades and roofs of the two buildings — that of the early 19th century and the Marion de Givry Hotel — have been protected under the Historic Monuments since a decree of 26 April 1984. The property is now shared between the municipality of Nevers and private actors, illustrating a heritage management combining preservation and adaptation to contemporary needs. The site thus maintains a tangible record of its educational and residential past, while addressing current social issues.

The building is part of the architectural landscape of the Nièvre, department of Burgundy-Franche-Comté, where it is one of the listed historical monuments. Its location, although documented (addresses rue Mirangron and rue des Francs-Bourgeois), remains approximate according to available sources, with cartographic accuracy assessed as satisfactory a priori. The archives also mention its inclusion in the Mérimée database, a reference tool for the French heritage.
