Origin and history
Rayssac's command office, located in Albi, Tarn, is an old hospital command office founded at least in the 12th century. Attested from 1150 with a first commander, she became part of the legacy of the Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem, who consolidated their presence there after the dissolution of the Templars in 1312. Commandery then absorbed Templar goods, such as those of Cambon-du-Temple, and became a major administrative and religious centre under the jurisdiction of the Grand Priory of Saint-Gilles and the language of Provence.
The present building, mainly built in the 15th century, consists of a two-storey rectangular house body, framed by circular towers, one of which houses a spiral staircase. The interior walls preserve medieval frescoes, including the coat of arms of the Templiers and Toulouse. The French Revolution marked a turning point: the command office was sequestered, auctioned and partly rebuilt. Ranked a historic monument in 1928, it now bears witness to the military and religious architecture of Occitanie.
The possessions of the commandary extended to many parishes and fiefs, such as Saint-Geniès de Puygouzon (1120), Notre-Dame de Mazières (15th century), and the Cambon-du-Temple (1313), the Templar heritage. These lands, managed by successive commanders including Jacques de Filartigue (died 1556) or Louis de Forbin de Gardane (until 1684), reflect the economic and spiritual influence of order in the region. The Commanderie also served as an agricultural centre, with estates such as La Boual and La Ramaziès.
The story of Rayssac is documented by fragmentary sources, including the works of Abbé Nicolas (1906) and Augustus Vidal (1913), who describe his role in the Diocese of Albi. The archives reveal conflicts, such as that between the Commander and the chapter of Castres in 1220 for the church of Saint-Benoît de Gourgues, or donations such as that of the church of Saint-Geniès in 1120. These elements underline its importance in medieval and modern local dynamics.
Today, the Rayssac Commandery, located at 9001 Chemin du Château de Rayssac, remains an architectural testimony of the religious military orders. Its walls, marked by mortals and painted decorations, as well as its spatial organization around a court of honor, illustrate both its defensive function and its prestige. Listed in the inventory of historical monuments, it invites to discover an unknown part of the Albige and Occitan heritage.
