Origin and history

The Quesnoy County Castle was founded around 1160 as a twenty-sided polygon surrounded by ditches and with flat foothills. The main house, located to the south, housed a chapel on two levels, of which a Gothic archature remains. Two floors of Romanesque cellars, reinforced in the 17th century, and the front door of the 12th century (recast later) bear witness to this first period.

In the 17th century, the architect Liberal Bruant, in the service of the king, designed a new wing. The house body was rebuilt from 1681, while the gallery was divided into rooms before 1754. In the 18th century, the Cernay Pavilion (eastern part) was rebuilt on medieval cellars, perhaps incorporating modern elements. Major work took place in 1928 with the arrival of the mobile Republican Guard.

Protected remains include the Cernay Barracks (former large hall and 18th century pavilion), the entrance tower, ditches and courtyard floors. The ensemble, owned by the commune, illustrates a continuous architectural evolution, from medieval origins to modern times.
