Origin and history

The prehistoric camp known as La Butte de Murat is a monument located in the commune of Ferriere-Larçon, in Indre-et-Loire (Centre-Val de Loire region). This site, whose construction dates back to Prehistory, bears witness to an ancient human occupation in this geographical area. Although the precise details of its use or organization remain partially unknown, its inscription as a Historical Monument by decree of 14 June 1990 underlines its heritage and archaeological importance.

In Prehistory, fortified camps such as the Murat Butt were often used as refuges or community places for local populations. These structures, usually located on reliefs, offered a strategic position for surveillance of the territory and protection against possible threats. In the regional context of the Centre-Val de Loire, these archaeological sites provide a better understanding of the ways of life, the construction techniques and the social organization of the human groups of this distant era.
