Origin and history

The compound of Thann is a historic monument located in the city of Thann, in the department of Upper Rhine, in the Grand East region. Built in the third quarter of the 14th century, this fortification partially surrounds the city and bears witness to the late medieval defensive architecture. It is representative of the protection needs of Alsatian cities at that time, marked by frequent political and military tensions.

The enclosure was classified in two historical monuments: the Tower of the Cigognes was classified by decree of 4 March 1920, while the facades and roofs of the Tower of the Witch and the adjoining house, located in Burgert Square, were classified on 28 November 1963. These protections illustrate the heritage importance of these remains, now partially private and partly communal. The precise location of certain elements, such as the Cigognes Tower (cadastre 10 118b), is documented in the archives.

At the time of its construction, Thann was a dynamic city integrated into the Alsatian urban network, where the fora played a key role in defending people and controlling trade. These fortifications also reflected the economic and political status of the city, often linked to trade routes or territorial conflicts in the region. Today, Thann's enclosure remains a material testimony to this story, although its state of conservation and accessibility vary according to the sections.
