Origin and history
The fortified enclosure of Rouffach, mentioned as a historical monument, dates from the 12th and 13th centuries. It illustrates the medieval defensive architecture typical of the Alsatian region, designed to protect the inhabitants and commercial activities of the city. These ramparts, characteristic of the prosperous villages of the time, reflect the political and military tensions of the Middle Ages.
At that time, Rouffach, located in the present Haut-Rhin department, was a dynamic urban centre integrated with the trading networks of the Alsace plain. The fortified fora played a key role in structuring cities, delineating the urban space and symbolizing the power of local lords or bourgeois communities. Their construction met both security needs and economic challenges by controlling access and taxes on goods.
