Origin and history
The medieval enclosure of Pesmes is a set of fortifications built between the 13th and 14th centuries to protect the city. Located in the department of Haute-Saône, Burgundy-Franche-Comté, it bears witness to the defensive needs of the medieval era, with successive destructions and reconstructions until the sixteenth century. The remains still visible today, such as the gates Loigerot and Saint-Hilaire, as well as traces of ramparts and ditches, date mainly from this last period of reconstruction.
The fortifications of Pesmes suffered several destructions during the Middle Ages, the last dating back to the sixteenth century. Despite these upheavals, some architectural elements, such as doors and remains of towers, have survived to this day. The compound was listed as historic monuments in 1993, recognizing its heritage importance. Protected remains include Saint-Hilaire and Loigerot Gates, ramparts sections, as well as the overall layout of the enclosure, including parts buried or integrated into later constructions.
The property of the compound is shared between private actors, the municipality of Pesmes, and a private company. Although some elements are still visible, such as gates and fragments of ramparts, the general condition of the remains varies, with a location considered satisfactory a priori according to available sources. The approximate address of the remains is located around Rue Saint-Hilaire, in the heart of the historic village, recalling the strategic importance of Pesmes during the Middle Ages.
