Fortified protohistoric enclosure comprising several lines of ramparts (Box E 1, 4): inscription by order of 8 March 1982

Origin and history

The fortified protohistoric enclosure of Ostabat-Asme is a historical monument whose remains also extend over the nearby municipalities of Lantabat and Larceveau-Arros-Cibits. This site, classified as historical monuments by decree of 8 March 1982, bears witness to a human occupation dating back to the Protohistory, with persistent traces until the Gallo-Roman period. Its ramparts, organized in several defensive lines, illustrate the fortification techniques of these epochs.

The location of this site, although documented in the Merimée database under Insee 64437 (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), remains approximate, with an accuracy considered poor (note 5/10). The GPS coordinates available place some of the remains near Saint-Martin, on the municipality of Lantabat. This type of protohistoric enclosure generally served as a refuge or strategic control place for local populations, reflecting a complex social and military organization.

Available data, from sources such as Monumentum, do not specify the conditions for access or openness to the public. No information is provided on any tourist services (guided tours, rentals, accommodation). The lack of details about archaeological excavations or associated discoveries limits the fine understanding of its past use, although its listing as historic monuments underscores its heritage importance.
