Origin and history

The parish enclosures of Plougonven, located in the Finistère, is a remarkable architectural ensemble around the church of Saint Yves. Ranked a historical monument in 1916, it includes the church, a calvary and a funeral chapel (ossuary), illustrating Breton religious art of the 15th and 16th centuries. The church, built between 1511 and 1523 by Philippe Beaumanoir, has a flamboyant Gothic style with a characteristic bell tower and gargoyles. It was restored after a fire in 1930.

The calvary, erected in 1554 by Bastien and Henry Prigent, rests on an octagonal base and is four metres tall. It depicts scenes of Christ's life and Passion, as well as Saint Yves, with characters dressed in 16th century fashion. Reversed in 1794, it was raised in 1810. His inscription recalls his dedication to God, Notre-Dame-de-Pitié and Saint Yves.

The funeral chapel (ossuary), dating from the 16th century, is distinguished by its gables decorated with crossettes and Gothic archatures. Former oratory dedicated to Saint Eutrope, he housed bones transferred in 1884. The ossuary is covered with local slates, and the tomb of Abbé Le Teurnier, carved by Yann Larc'hantec, is present.

The church of Saint Yves, originally known as Saint Conven, was placed in 1532 under that of the Trinity and Saint Yves. Its side porch, decorated with the weapons of Pierre de Gaspern, a panetier of the Queen Claude of France, houses a chamber of archives. The altars in keranton are also the work of Yann Larc'hantec.
