Origin and history

The Epi hold is an emblematic pier of the port of La Houle in Cancale, built in 1838 by Ponts et Chaussées. This 50-metre-long, 4-metre-wide, dry-stone structure was pierced with 19 arches separated by steps to facilitate boat berthing. Its innovative architecture, combining functionality and protection against winds, makes it an early example of a pierced pier in Brittany or even France.

In 1886, the hold was extended by a bent structure, mixing stone and concrete, while its arches, considered harmful to the tranquillity of the anchorage, were closed around 1890. Ranked a historic monument in 1995, it embodies the evolution of harbour techniques in the 19th century and the Breton maritime heritage. Its restoration in the same year allowed to preserve its unique stair system covering 21 vaults in piles of loads.

Lepi de la Houle is also distinguished by its role in local economic development, linked to fisheries and maritime trade. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments underlines its architectural and historical importance, while offering lasting protection to this exceptional work, owned by the department of Ille-et-Vilaine.
