Vestiges of ramparts comprising three casemates (serving deposits) surmounted by a round road, rue de la Coutelerie : inscription by order of 4 March 1954; Remains of ramparts (including casemates) and adjoining garden, boulevard Jean-Jaurès: inscription by order of 4 March 1954
Origin and history
The ramparts of Pontoise, located in Val-d'Oise in Île-de-France, are partly preserved historical remains. They include three casemates, used as depots, as well as a round road located on Rue de la Coutelerie. These elements, inscribed in the Historical Monuments by decree of 4 March 1954, illustrate Pontoise's strategic importance at a time when fortifications played a key role in the protection of cities.
The remains also extend Jean-Jaurès Boulevard, where remains of ramparts and an adjacent garden have also been protected since the same date. These structures, now owned by the municipality, recall the medieval or modern urban organization, marked by defensive enclosures. Their presence reflects security and access control concerns, typical of the fortified cities of the region.
Although the exact period of construction is not specified in available sources, listing as Historic Monuments underscores their heritage value. Their location, between Rue de la Coutelerie and Boulevard Jean-Jaurès, allows us to imagine the original extent of these fortifications, now reduced to fragments. These remains offer an overview of Pontoise's military and urban history, integrated into a landscape today marked by challenges of preservation and valorization.
