Origin and history

Escal的Atlantic is a interpretive centre dedicated to the history of transoceanic ships, located in Saint-Nazaire, in the Loire-Atlantique department (Land of the Loire). Located in the former German submarine base of the Second World War, this 3,700 m2 cultural site on three levels plunges visitors into the world of liners thanks to immersive scenography, collectibles (nearly 200 exhibits) and multimedia devices. Inaugurated in 2000, it welcomed more than 2 million visitors before its renovation in 2013, which modernized its course while maintaining its ship-inspired architecture.

Saint-Nazaire, a major transatlantic port from 1862 to the Second World War, was also the cradle of French shipbuilding. The Transatlantic General Company established its first regular lines to Central America and the West Indies, with liners such as La Louisiana (1862) and the Empress Eugénie (1865). Between 1862 and 2013, local shipyards built 121 ships, including mythical giants such as Île-de-France (1927), Normandy (1935) and France (1962). Escal-Atlantic is part of this tradition, celebrating both the golden age of crossing and the Nazairian industrial know-how.

The current stage design, signed Philippe Comte, combines reconstituted decorations (machine room, bridge walk, cabins) and authentic objects, such as panels of lacquer by Jean Dunand or a chandelier by Gilbert Poillerat from France. The collections, enriched by a repository of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, illustrate art deco and the luxury of the ships, while addressing less well-known themes: crew life, propulsion, or the role of ships in transatlantic migration. Interactive devices, such as an animated planosphere or a game about life on board, complete the experiment.

The site is located in two cells of the underwater base, a monumental vestige of World War II. This symbolic choice links pre-war port history to the reconstruction of Saint-Nazaire, 85% of which was destroyed between 1940 and 1945. The Ville-Port project, launched in the 1990s under the leadership of Mayor Joël Batteux, rehabilitated this area by integrating Escal-Atlantic as a cultural engine. The centre works with French and international institutions, such as the French Lines association or the Library of Congress, to deepen research on ships.

The flagship pieces exhibited include decorative elements from Normandy (glass straps from Auguste Labouret, lacquers from Jean Dunand), the Freedom Music Salon (1950), or a 1930s Louis Vuitton trunk cabinet. These objects, selected for their historical and aesthetic value, testify to the role of liners as ambassadors of the French style. Escal-Atlantic also addresses the technical aspects (propulsion, navigation) and social aspects (migrations, hierarchies on board), offering a complete vision of this age of maritime gold, which has now disappeared with the advent of aviation.
