The monumental staircase in its entirety (not cadastralized): inscription by decree of 23 October 2014
Origin and history
The staircase of Pont-Saint-Esprit, built in the mid-19th century, is distinguished by its structure in two parallel flights surrounding a large central landing. The latter is based on seven arcades supported by carved caps, while the decor is inspired by medieval references, such as Lombardic bands, lesenes and blind arches. These stylistic elements harmonize with the two neighbouring churches and the adjacent bridge, creating an architectural unit marked by historical eclecticism.
Ranked as Historic Monument since 2014, this monumental staircase is the property of the municipality of Pont-Saint-Esprit. Its inclusion in the inventory of protected monuments underlines its heritage value, both for its aesthetics and for its role in urban development. The location, near Place George Ville, and its integration into the river landscape make it an emblematic crossing point, although its geographical accuracy is considered mediocre (level 5/10).
The staircase design reflects a desire to reconcile functionality and symbolism. The medieval motifs, although built in the 19th century, evoke an ancient architectural heritage, strengthening the link between the monument and the surrounding religious heritage. The absence of specific cadastration in official documents suggests a comprehensive approach to its protection, centred on the whole structure rather than isolated elements.
