Origin and history

Espace Georges Brassens is a museum located in Sète, Occitanie, entirely dedicated to the author-songwriter-interpreter Georges Brassens, originally from the city. Opened in 1991 at the initiative of Mayor Yves Marchand, it was renovated and enlarged in 2006 under the leadership of architect Christian Salvador and Mayor François Comminhes. This museum, the most visited in Sète with 50,000 annual admissions, offers an immersive one-hour course with audio headset, a video room, and educational activities for schools. It also serves as a resource centre for researchers, journalists and artists interested in Brassens' work.

The museum organizes temporary exhibitions, conferences (sometimes illustrated by foreign interpreters), meetings with authors, and signatures of works. It also hosts the annual French song festival "When I Think of Fernande", created in 2002 in partnership with the city of Sète and Zalana Productions. This festival highlights a variety of artists, from Patrick Bruel to Zaz, Zebda or Olivia Ruiz, and includes an evening dedicated to singer-songwriters, "Nothing to throw away". Another evening, "Board of George", allows bands to reinterpret Brassens songs, such as the Louis Martinez Trio (jazz versions) or the Friends of Brassens.

Since its opening, the Brassens Space has welcomed more than 900,000 visitors. It functions as a "shelter" for the artist's enthusiasts, offering thematic visits for the school (text analysis, versification), exhibitions on figures related to Brassens (such as the bassist Pierre Nicolas or the painter Pierre François), and musical events. The museum thus plays a key role in the transmission of Brassens' cultural heritage, while stimulating Sète's artistic life.

The museum's activities include meetings with the press, presentations of works on Brassens, and academic lectures. He collaborates with international interpreters (Spanish, Italian) and serves as a platform for researchers working on his work. The Espace Brassens embodies both a tribute to the artist and a living place of creation, exchange and celebration of the French song.
