Origin and history
The former municipal public school of Sainte-Florence, located in Essarts en Bocage (Vendée), was built in the mid-20th century. This building, now classified as a Historical Monument, housed the family of artist Gaston Chaissac between 1948 and 1961. His wife practised there as a teacher from 1948 to 1952, during which time Chaissac made murals, including "wall giants", as well as graffiti in the school latrines.
The school's facades, roofs, meadows and latrines were included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 5 October 1998. The site, now known as Espace Chaissac, offers a scenography dedicated to the life and work of the artist, accessible all year round. The building, owned by the commune, thus bears witness to the link between school heritage and artistic creation.
The official address of the monument, according to the Mérimée base, is 6 Rue Gaston Chaissac in Sainte-Florence (85140), in the department of Vendée ( Pays de la Loire region). The protected elements specifically include facades, roofs, meadows and latrines, recognized for their heritage value and their association with Gaston Chaissac, painter and author of interior decorations.
