Origin and history

The former headquarters of the Paris Chamber of Commerce, located 2 Place de la Bourse in the 2nd arrondissement, is a building built in 1832 by architect Felix Callet for the auctioneers of the Seine. The Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry, founded in 1803, established in 1852. This monument illustrates the economic expansion of the capital in the 19th century, with architecture adapted to the administrative and symbolic needs of the institution.

In 1891, the architect Just Lisch enlarged the building by adding a sitting room on the second floor. This room is decorated in 1900 by an Art Nouveau window, Le Travail, by Industry and Commerce, enriches the Humanity, designed by Eugène Grasset and directed by Félix Gaudin. This allegorical stained glass window, exposed to the Universal Exhibition of 1900 before its installation, celebrates the technical and economic advances carried by the Chamber of Commerce, such as the creation of the port of Ivry-sur-Seine.

The stained glass window, composed of six central panels representing Labour, Commerce and Industry, is surrounded by twelve panels illustrating modern inventions (transport, electricity, communications). Its Art Nouveau style, marked by plant interlaces, reflects the technological optimism of the time. Ranked a historic monument in 1994 (with an amendment to the decree in 2013), it reflects the key role of the Chamber of Commerce in Parisian economic development.

The building itself, of a sober and functional style, embodies the evolution of public institutions in the 19th century. Its strategic location, near the Stock Exchange, highlights its link to the financial and commercial world. Today, although the Chamber of Commerce has left the premises, the building and its stained glass window remain symbols of the industrial and artistic heritage of Paris.
