Former pigeon-maker (Case F 69): entry by order of 4 July 1996
Origin and history
The former seigneurial dovecote d'Ombrée d'Anjou is a historical monument located in the department of Maine-et-Loire, on the present town of Ombrée d'Anjou, near Pouancé. This building, registered with historical monuments in 1996, is historically associated with the castle of Pouancé, one of the main fortresses of Anjou on the border between Anjou and Brittany. Its architecture and location reflect its role in the medieval and modern seigneurial organization.
The seigneurial dovecoons, like that of Pouancé, were symbols of power and wealth in the Middle Ages and modern times. Reserved for nobility, they allowed the breeding of pigeons, a precious food resource and a seigneurial privilege. In the Pays de la Loire region, marked by border conflicts between Anjou and Brittany, these buildings also illustrated the domination of local lords over their lands and vassals.
Their preservation today offers a material testimony of this missing social and economic system.
