The 15th century turret with the adjoining circular construction and 1 m 50 wall on each side: ranking by decree of 21 December 1922 - The facades and roofs of the farm building (see E 878): inscription by decree of 21 July 1989

Origin and history

The La Vacherie Farm, located in Tourves in the Var, is an atypical historical monument. Although its name evokes an agricultural holding, it is in reality the old dairy of Valbelle Castle. This site consists of two distinct parts: a 15th century turret, a witness to medieval architecture, and a farm building built in the 18th century, reflecting the agricultural and architectural evolutions of that period.

The 15th century turret, classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 21 December 1922, is accompanied by an adjoining circular construction and a portion of a wall. These elements illustrate the defence and storage techniques of the medieval era. The farm building, on the other hand, saw its facades and roofs listed in the inventory of Historical Monuments by decree of 21 July 1989, emphasizing its heritage importance in the Provencal rural landscape.

This monument offers a rare example of the coexistence of two distinct architectural periods within a single ensemble. The medieval turret, probably linked to a system of surveillance or protection, contrasts with the 18th century farm, which met the agricultural and dairy needs of the estate of Valbelle Castle. Today, although the practical information about his visit remains limited, his state of conservation and his location in Tourves make it a valuable testimony to the rural history of Provence.
