Origin and history
The Ferme de la Carrière, located in Saint-Crépin-aux-Bois in the Hauts-de-France, is a historic monument dating from the 16th century, with modifications in the 1st quarter of the 20th century. It originally belonged to the religious Celestines of the Priory of Sainte-Croix-sub-Offémont. This site illustrates the architecture of the large fortified farms of the Sosonnais, combining agricultural habitat and defensive system. The adjacent quarries, still marked by stone extraction techniques, enrich its material and intangible heritage.
During the First World War, the careers served as shelter for the soldiers, leaving tangible traces such as graffiti, an improvised altar and a bas-relief representing an Alsatian figure. These elements reflect the military occupation of the site and its role during the conflict. The farm, including house, stable, dovecote and barn, as well as all quarries, was classified as Historic Monument by order of 14 September 2007.
The site is also distinguished by its location in the department of Oise (60), in Picardie, a region marked by a strong rural and artisanal history. Fortified farms like this played a central role in the local economy, combining agricultural production, crop storage and property protection. Their conception reflected the defensive needs of the 16th and 17th centuries, in a context of frequent conflicts and chronic insecurity.
