Origin and history

Herbigny Farm is a building located in the commune of Saint-Gatien-des-Bois, in the Calvados department, Normandy. It dates from the first half of the seventeenth century, when its dovecote, called "magnificent" by Arcisse de Caumont, was built. This dovecote, emblematic of the farm, is the only vestige of this time still partially preserved and protected.

Originally, the land of Herbigny belonged to the Lambert family, who also owned the land of Mont-Saint-Jean at the end of the 16th century. The family included prominent figures from the Old Regime, including two provincial intendants and state councillors. The farm then changed hands, belonging in particular to the father-in-law of Amédée Renée, Member of Parliament for Calvados from 1852 to 1859.

The house of the farm, contemporary of the dovecote, bears witness to the rural architecture of the period. The ensemble was partially listed as historic monuments on September 9, 1933, recognizing its heritage value. Today, the farm remains a representative example of Norman farms in the 17th and 19th centuries, although its precise history and subsequent transformations are partially documented.
