Oppidum Camp of Canada (portions) (Box AP 37-39): Order in Council of April 25, 1983
Origin and history
The Oppidum du Canada de Fécamp is a major archaeological site of the Iron Age, located in the commune of Fécamp, in the Seine-Maritime department. This monument, partially protected by a classification under the Historical Monuments since 1983, illustrates the Gaulish occupation in this coastal region of Normandy. The preserved remains, although limited to portions of the site, provide an overview of the defensive strategies and spatial organization of the communities of that time.
The location of the oppidum, mentioned as approximate (59 Chemin du Nid de Verdier), reflects the precision challenges associated with ancient archaeological data. Private property, access and value depends on local initiatives. At the Iron Age, the oppidas played a central role as strong places, places of exchange and symbols of power for the Gaulish peoples.
Their establishment in Normandy, close to sea and land routes, emphasized their strategic importance in the commercial and military networks of the time.
