Origin and history
The feudal motte called La Butte Noire is a historical monument located in the commune of Bougy-lez-Neuville, in the Loiret department (45), in the Centre-Val de Loire region. This site, dated from the Middle Ages, illustrates the defensive structures characteristic of this period, often associated with seigneurial organization and the protection of local territories. Its inscription as a Historical Monument by order of 4 March 1980 bears witness to its heritage importance and the desire to preserve this type of vestige.
Feudal mottes, such as Black Butt, were generally built between the 10th and 12th centuries to serve as surveillance and refuge points. They were integrated into a network of light fortifications, often accompanied by ditches and wooden palisades. In the context of the Middle Ages in the Centre-Val de Loire, these works reflected the political and military tensions of the time, as well as the emergence of an Earth aristocracy.
Their strategic location, often near communication routes or agricultural areas, highlighted their role in controlling local resources and populations.
