Origin and history

La Ferme des Graves is a farm located in Redortiers, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department. Originally it belonged to the Coulomb family, which abandoned it in the 19th century when the village was depopulated. Unlike other inhabitants, Coulomb left the roof intact, thus preserving the building from ruin.

In the 1930s, friends of writer Jean Giono rediscovered the farm, still in excellent condition despite a century of abandonment. Seduced by its potential, they buy it to make it an intellectual and artistic meeting place. From 1935 to 1939, it hosted the Rencontres du Contadour, a cultural event designed to revitalize the deserted villages of Haute-Provence.

Nicknamed the "Moulin de Giono", the farm was listed as a historical monument in 1996 for its role in local history and its remarkable state of conservation. It symbolizes both the rural exodus of the 19th century and the cultural renewal carried by Giono and its circle in the 20th century.
